Tires require more attention than most other car parts. This makes sense, as tires are the only component directly touching the road, and they’re so crucial for your safety. Follow this Honda tire maintenance schedule to keep your tires strong, secure, and long-lasting.

Monitor Tire Air Pressure

Improperly inflated tires can wear down unevenly, overheat, lose traction, and even blow out, so make sure you keep your tires at the correct PSI. This can be found in your owner’s manual.

Once a month, and also before long trips, use a tire pressure gauge to measure the pressure of each tire and remove or add air when needed. Always do this when the tire is cold; first thing in the morning is usually best.

Inspect Your Tires for Damage

Examine your tires for signs of damage monthly as well. Look for bulges, cuts, embedded objects, deep cracks, bald patches, and significantly uneven wear patterns. Bring any damaged tires to the attention of a Honda technician; you may need replacements. Car tires should also be inspected for damage after heavy impacts with potholes or unusual tire behavior.

Measure the Tread Depths

Tires typically start with tread depths of 10/32 or 11/32 of an inch. Over the following four to six years, these treads wear down until they’re too shallow to properly displace water on wet road surfaces, which makes them susceptible to skidding. Measure your tire treads occasionally, and more often as the tires grow older. Always replace tires when the treads reach 2/32 of an inch in depth.

Have Your Tires Rotated

Irregular wear patterns will shorten the lifespan of your tires and increase the risk of an accident. Have your tires rotated twice a year to combat this common problem. Also, rotate your tires as soon as you notice uneven wear.

Balance Tires When They’re New

Ideally, a tire should have an equal distribution of weight all around the circumference. However, newly installed tires are sometimes unbalanced, with one point of the tire’s rim heavier than the rest. This roughens your ride, puts a strain on the suspension, and weakens the tire, which creates a safety hazard. Always have new tires balanced and even check the balancing of older tires periodically.
