1. Calhoun County Museum
Established in the late 1950s to preserve and promote the culture and traditions of the area, Calhoun County Museum is one of the most popular cultural centers in the region. Offering free admission and parking, as well as guided tours led by local experts, this place is located at 313 Butler Street in the town of Matthews and can be reached in just 20 minutes by car from downtown Orangeburg via route US-601.
Calhoun County Museum is open to the public Tuesday through Friday between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. Boasting over 20,000 square feet of exhibit space, this place features a large collection of historical books, bible records, ancient maps, and old newspapers, as well as permanent exhibitions of local art pieces.
2. The Pink Palace
Located at 201-239 Meeting Street in the heart of the Orangeburg downtown area, The Pink Palace is a historical structure that was constructed in the 1860s to serve as the county’s local prison. Considered one of the few examples of Gothic castellated architecture in the state of South Carolina, this building can be easily reached on foot from most local landmarks in the city center.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, The Pink Palace still maintains its original structure and most of its internal features. Open only for guided visits, this local landmark is a fantastic place to learn about the region’s major historical events, including the takeover of the building by Union forces during the occupation of Orangeburg in the American Civil War.
3. Elloree Heritage Museum and Cultural Center
Another fantastic place to learn about the history of rural South Carolina, the Elloree Heritage Museum and Cultural Center is located at 2714 W Cleveland Street in the town of Elloree and can be reached in about 25 minutes by car from downtown Orangeburg via route US-301, Five Chop Road, and Cleveland Street. This museum is dedicated to showcasing rural life in the region, as well as the major historical events that took place in the area.
